This section contains images gathered in the course of fieldwork on the Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula (ALPI) which are preserved in the Rodríguez-Castellano collection (Tomás Navarro Tomás Library, Social Sciences and Humanities Centre of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas in Madrid). Most of the collection is made up of photographs or drawings that correspond to the thematic list where the questionnaire asked for a photograph, or diagrams required by certain questions. The following list appears on page 50 of the IIE (Extended) Notebook and on the page 27 of the II G (General) Notebook, under the title Photographs:

Based on these instructions, the fieldworkers took photos matching these themes, some of them of great ethnographic value. It is a pity that only the ones from the Rodríguez-Castellano collection have been preserved. In general they include a brief description including location, handwritten on the back of the photos by the fieldworker. For this reason we have also digitized the backs of the photos, which in some cases turn out to be interesting. The photos have been classified according to the fields which the database provides for the questionnaire responses, which are detailed in the Clasification menu. This allows searches to be done on all the classifiable photos and images, for example, under “Weather”, “Man and woman”, “Clothing”, “The House”, etc.

Upon entering the ALPI Gallery, through the box on the left side, the search can be combined with other elements that appear in the photo captions, such as information about a specific place, about a province, about a given object, etc. And, by entering Subjects, you can retrieve the images of many of the survey subjects, the participants to whom we owe the information we have in the ALPI.
